Most people, when they hear the word preconception, they think about women. However, preconception is essential for men, too.
Your doctor usually prescribes the next tests:
I. Blood tests:
1. Rh and blood type,
2. Complete blood count (CBC),
3. Hormonal evaluation - FSH (Follicle-stimulating hormone), Testosterone, Estradiol, and Prolactin,
4. Hepatitis B and C serology,
5. Testing HIV,
6. Rubella,
7. Herpes,
8. Other STDs (ex: chlamydia, syphilis, gonorrhea).
II. Urine Summary: pH, Protein, Glucose, White blood cells, Bilirubin, Blood in the urine.
Urine culture. Indicates if you have a urinary infection.
III. Spermogram (shows if the problem is in the male reproductive system).
Sperm count is the number of sperm that should be present in a given sample.
The sperm should show progressive motility at least 32 percent.
IV. Assessment of the pelvic region (prostate evaluation, find about hormonal problems through the presence of varicocele).
Varicoceles affect the testicular area in men.
They are similar to varicose veins.
Once a varicocele appears, it will not go away on its own.
